Sad to say but the great Paul Motian passed last week. He worked with the seminal Bill Evans trio, with Bill and Scott Lafaro. Paul also recorded with my teacher(the great Alan Pasqua).
The way I got to know Paul's playing was through the KJ American quartet that was around in the early to mid seventies. That band had a special groove and Paul was a main catalyst. There was something about him that absolutely did not try to impress anyone with his playing. That to me was what impressed me so much!
Also, he has an extensive list of albums he put out on his own on ECM. I don't own any but will soon. I have heard a bunch of them and they are amazing as well. Like a lot of cats, he wrote at the piano - there is something about a non-pianist writing something at the piano that gets me.,....hits me right where I live...his songs were powerful and profound.
To your family and loved ones, we pray....goodbye Paul.....
